U.S. stocks open higher after in linecore consumer inflation
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — U.S. stocks posted strong gains in opening trade Friday, boosted by a rising dollar, falling crude oil prices, and in-line May consumer price inflation, excluding food and energy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 79 points, or 0.7%, to 12,219, with 26 of its 30 components advancing. The S&P 500 index , while the Nasdaq Composite rose 15 points, or 0.6%, to 2,419. The consumer price increase rose 0.6% in May, compared to expectations for a 0.5% gain. Excluding food and energy costs, prices rose 0.2%, matching forecasts. A report on consumer sentiment for June is due at 10 a.m. Eastern.
